Job Purpose and Impact

The Food Safety Quality and Regulatory Screener will complete monitoring and verification activities to ensure plant compliance with food safety programs, quality standards, certifications, and regulatory requirements. This role supports overall quality objectives by influencing employees and promoting adherence to established procedures. The position monitors CFIA regulatory activities, serves as a liaison between CFIA and plant operations, and assists with inspection readiness. Responsibilities may include performing pre-inspection verification tasks on carcasses and parts, including the use of knives in accordance with regulatory requirements. The technician may rotate through harvest areas, including head, viscera, and carcass stations, to support compliance activities. Strong communication skills are essential due to frequent interaction with CFIA inspectors and plant personnel.

Key Accountabilities

  • Complete food safety, sanitation, operational, risk material and control room monitoring.
  • Review daily material processing procedures and verify all applicable monitoring documents, taking immediate corrective actions when deviations are identified.
  • Maintain food safety records, imputing and assigning deviation reports as required.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the plant for each one of the critical control points and sanitation monitoring zones, ensuring all monitors are adhering to the written food safety programs.
  • Perform unbiased audits throughout the facility to ensure adherence to sanitation procedures for critical job tasks.
  • Communicate deviations to management and ensure they are documented, assigned correctly and completed in a timely manner and follow up on corrective actions and preventative measures to ensure they are effective.
  • Provide and administer food safety certification training to plant employees including theoretical training related to quality programs.
  • Handle complex clerical, administrative, technical or customer support issues under minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Required
High school diploma, secondary education level or equivalent
Experience with email, spreadsheet and word processing applications
Basic knowledge of safe food handling practices
Basic knowledge of employee safety practices
Basic math skills (read and compare weights and measurements, add, subtract, multiply, divide
coordinate lot #’s with orders etc.)
Ability to stand for several hours at a time, lift to 50 pounds, work in hot, humid environment 
and use tools (knife, hook, etc.)

 

Preferred 
Bachelor's degree in a science related field
Minimum of two years of experience in a food manufacturing facility
Beef processing Experience with knife experience
Ability to learn technical procedures and concepts.
Strong understanding of CFIA requirements.
